Homemade, low waste citrus all-purpose cleaning spray!

Citrus+Vinegar+solution

How many years have you been purchasing your cleaning supplies from the grocery store assuming they are the best solution? Well it is finally coming out how toxic these products can truly be in your house. So I dare you to ditch the commercial cleaning products!

I know, I know… They smell good and you’ve used them your whole life. But this is also true: They lead to pollution, waste, and are full of unhealthy toxins for your family to be around.  So instead, try this cheap yet effective life hack… Repurpose your vinegar for a simple yet effective all-purpose cleaning spray.

There are many benefits to make your own cleaning supplies.

  1. Cheaper

  2. You know exactly what ingredients are going into it so it will always be non-toxic. *

  3. Reduces plastic waste as you can refill a glass spray bottle each time.

  4. You can put food waste such as citrus peels to good use rather than throwing away (or hopefully composting)

*An unknown fact is that many traditional cleaning supplies in the grocery store are toxic. Many release volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) leading to chronic respiratory problems.

What you will need :

White Vinegar
Water
Orange Peels
Spray Bottle
Masson Jar

Instructions :

  1. Save your orange peels from an orange. Don’t let them sit out for too long.

  2. Pour 1/3 white vinegar into the mason jar.

  3. Pour 2/3 of water into the mason jar. Don’t fill the jar all the way to make sure you have room for the orange peels.

  4. Add orange peels to the solution. The more you add the strong the citrus scent.

  5. Tighten the lid and let this solution sit for 2 weeks to 2 months. The longer you let it sit the more of a citrus smell you will get.

  6. If it still smells like vinegar you can add lemon essential oils before using.

  7. Once you have the desired scent drain the solution from the orange peels and pour the liquid into a spray bottle. Your new cleaning solution is ready to use!

This cleaning product is good for most surfaces such as glass, stainless steel, mirrors, bathroom tubs, stains and many more. Please don’t use vinegar on wood surfaces or wood floors, granite, quartz, or marble. It wont do any immediate damage but over the years the acid in the vinegar can damage the surface. I would recommend using soap and water.

Some people like to infuse just the vinegar and add the water once you drain the peels and add it to the spray bottle.

Let me know how this worked out for you and if you plan on using this for years to come?!
